If you are a person who frequents the Union Square farmer’s market, you will have noticed that the pivotal and very palpable shift from late spring to early summer has started to emerge. The sungold tomatoes are creeping in, the favas, the peas, the squash, the flowers, it is abundant out there! The frenzy of chefs at their witching hour (8-10 am during market days) has nearly reached its fever pitch. We are guilty as charged. Like most things in this great city, the market, particularly now, becomes a “spot”, a “thing to do”. Combining the practicality and genuine enthusiasm/ necessity for seasonal vegetables with “aesthetic” (zucchini blossoms are aesthetic) , it offers a healthy mix of cooks, clad in their chef whites, disgruntled and in a rush, with content creators, clad in lulu lemon, mostly in it for the peonies. There is no wrong way to market! The mad dash to get there early, lest the best of the tomatoes be sold out before the tender hour of 10 am, is a game, a dance, and you can rest assured you will be running into no fewer than 5 people you know.
